Casino welcome bonuses are bullshit. There, I said it.
It’s kinda crazy how many articles you see online pushing the “best signup offers”. Because they’re all garbage, every single one of them. And yet this is somehow accepted as the norm.

Exaggerating Slightly – But Not Much
Okay, perhaps I can think of one or two situations where there’s value in taking a casino welcome bonus. If you’re a complete beginner, for example, having extra chips to figure out a game, or test a new site, is nice.
But good luck meeting those 40x playthrough requirements – if you’re lucky – when you win.
For a mid-to-high stakes player, though, it’s almost always a waste of time. My game of choice is roulette. I always play the same 13 numbers. If I start out with £10 on each, that’s a £130 bet. But I still need to make over 300 more of those bets to clear the bonus terms. LOL.
Running the Numbers
Why not raise the stakes? Sure, let’s bet £25 a number – £325 per round. Covering just under one-third of the layout, there’s a 65% chance (roughly) I’ll miss. And I’ll whiff three times in a row – costing me £975 – more than 27% of the time.
Basically, I’d need an insane bankroll to clear a £40,000 requirement. But if I deposit more, the requirements also increase!
NB: £40,000 assumes a requirement of 40x the deposit amount, rather than deposit plus bonus. It also assumes live dealer roulette contributes 100% to the requirement, which is not guaranteed. That figure could, and probably will be, a lot higher at most casinos.
My Anti-Bonus Origin Story
I’ve always been too impatient to read instructions. As a kid, I just figured stuff out naturally with zero effort, like some kind of superpower. If my grandparents bought a gadget, I’d be summoned via telephone to teach them how to use it.
Unfortunately, this trained me into a very bad habit of never reading user manuals. Or any sort of instructions or fine print, really. As a result, I suffered a long period of being caught out by unforeseen circumstances.
Stung by a Welcome Bonus
Why am I droning on about this? Because a bad experience sometime in the mid-2000s taught me never to accept casino welcome bonuses. It’s something I still practice today.
I can’t actually remember which site it was, as it was so long ago. But it was definitely a legal and licensed operator in my native UK. Having seen an ad for a generous-looking signup bonus, I opened an account, made my deposit and began playing roulette.
Good Result – Initially
Luck was on my side that night – or so I thought. I ran up a decent profit almost immediately, then tried to withdraw everything. But that was the problem – I’d won too quickly.
I’d be lying if I said I remember the exact figures, but I think I’d won about £100 from a £20 deposit. I wasn’t much of a high roller in those days – that was a really good score for someone in my position at the time.
Upon trying to withdraw, I couldn’t. You probably already know where this is going.

What Do You Mean “Wagering Requirements”?
I contacted support to see why my withdrawals were blocked, and that’s when I discovered the concept of wagering requirements.
In those days, I was more of a horse racing and football punter. Sportsbook bonuses rarely carry such extreme restrictions, and I’d never encountered a 40x requirement before. Like all those pissed off consumers you read on Trustpilot, I was obviously furious.
Read the Fine Print
I told them it was a scam, since I had no option to decline the welcome bonus – there was no opt-out button in those days. Apparently I did have a choice, but I would have had to manually contact support first to remove it.
Damn that pesky fine print.
The CS agent told me they couldn’t remove the bonus now, as I’d already begun playing. If they did, it would reset everything back to the beginning and I’d lose all my winnings. No way I was going to do that.
Naturally, I stubbornly declined, and set out to meet the ridiculous playthrough requirement.
To the Slots We Go
I found the lowest-volatility slot I could, and sat grinding for close to an hour. “Fuck ‘em”, I thought. I knew I’d lose a bit, but I might get out with some, or maybe even most of my profit still intact.
As I was nearing the end of this punishing humiliation ritual, watching my winnings slowly drain away, I snagged a bonus round. I hated slots in those days, and didn’t really understand what was going on. But I dropped something in the region of £250, with the requirements almost completely finished.
Oh how I laughed. I’d tried to walk away and they wouldn’t let me. Now they had to pay me much more. Winner winner, chicken dinner.

Always Read the Fine Print
That obviously felt like a huge moral victory, and I was happy to gloat about it afterwards. But it really was a big win for me, as it taught me a valuable lesson about reading the terms and conditions.
From that day forward, I always contacted the support team to manually strip the welcome bonus from any new casino account. Even if I had to do it via email, as was common back then, and wait a day before playing.
I was very pleased when casinos later introduced an opt-out during the onboarding process.
Old Habits Die Hard
To this day, I never take welcome bonuses from casinos. I already know it’s going to be at least 30x, and with some operators, it might be as high as 80x. So why bother?
Having worked in iGaming operations for more than a decade, I now understand why they do this. But from the player’s perspective, it’s bullshit. A slots devotee might just about be able to meet the requirements. But playing live dealer roulette and blackjack, I’m almost never going to get out with a profit.
Final Thoughts
Honestly, I don’t really care if you want to take a welcome bonus. It’s your money, do as you please. But if you’re going to do it, make sure you pick one with the lowest wagering requirements possible.
Use 40x the deposit amount as your reference point. If the requirement combines both the deposit and the bonus amount, don’t bother.
A quick rule of thumb:
- 60x and above – Bullshit
- 40x to 60x – Way too high
- Exactly 40x – Standard
- 30x to 40x – Reasonable
- Below 30x – Unlikely, and still too high.
